While I did not experience this myself—having four sons of my own—I remember watching and feeling the heartbreak, the emptiness, and the quiet longing these couples carried every day. Even a short wait, like when I was trying for my third child, gave me a small glimpse of the worry and uncertainty that can stretch for years, and my heart goes out to anyone living through this journey.

The lyrics are meant to speak to all families and individuals who long for a child, capturing the hope, the grief, and the quiet prayers that fill the heart. These are lyrics about waiting, about loving someone you haven’t yet met, and about the profound emotional space that longing creates.

When I revisit these lyrics today, I see them as a diary of my observations—moments of heartbreak, moments of hope, and moments of quiet wonder at the strength and resilience of people waiting for a child. In 2025 and 2026, as I scroll through social media, the algorithm serves me up so many posts of people struggling through this journey, and honestly, my heart just totally breaks for them. Seeing all that suffering brought me back to these lyrics I wrote in 2005 and inspired me to put them into a lyric video, because it seems that so many people are living with this longing. Even though the lyrics were written years ago, they still carry the ache and the hope—the timeless tension between longing and loving.

In my 2019 published book of poems and lyrics, this song is titled We Wanna a Baby. For the purposes of this lyric video, I wanted the title to feel more personal and speak directly to the heart of the song, which is why I’ve named it The Child We’ve Never Met.
