Описание: As part of my series of discussing infrared observatories, the second example of ground-based observatories is this historic interferometric infrared telescope on Mt. Hopkins. It was an impressive technology demonstrator that was able to resolute large stars (Arcturus, Mira-stars, Cepheids). The mirrors used for it had a diameter of 45cm, the distance between them of 15 and 35m was enough to reach a resolution of a couple of milli-arcseconds (mas). The telescope was shut down in 2006, but its technology is now used in larger telescopes like Keck (Hawaii) and VLT (Chile). Once the ELT in Chile goes online, it should be able to resolute Arcturus without interferometry (estimated resolution of 10 mas). In interferometry, the development went from long wavelengths (radio) to visible light, and infrared was an important step between radio and visible wavelengths.
