Exploring a 1,200 Year Old Church in Devon | St Andrew’s Church Colyton

Описание: Today we’re exploring a 1,200 year old church in the historic Devon town of Colyton.


Right in the centre of the town stands St Andrew’s Church, a remarkable building with roots going all the way back to the Anglo-Saxon period. Over the centuries the church has grown and changed, with Norman foundations, medieval expansions, and later additions that reflect the long history of the community.


Inside the church we take a closer look at some fascinating features, including:


• A 10th-century Saxon Cross

• The Pole family chapel with historic tombs and effigies

• The largest west window of any English parish church



We also explore how Colyton became a wealthy medieval town through the wool trade, and why it later gained a reputation for being a rebellious town during the religious upheavals of the 1500s.
