The Wildlife Loop Road at Custer State Park in South Dakota is a beautiful scenic byway that is eighteen miles long and winds through pine covered hills and rolling grasslands. The Wildlife Loop is located on the south end of Custer State Park. This Wildlife Loop Road is host to most of the park’s wildlife and you can usually find bison, burros, and prairie dogs.
Custer State Park, South Dakota is a beautiful park and wildlife reserve of approximately 71,000 acres in the Black Hills. Custer State Park is known for its amazing landscapes, scenic drives, and a free roaming bison herd. The size of the bison herd varies slightly from year to year but averages approximately 1400 bison. Each spring around three to four hundred calves are born.
Bison are the largest mammal in North America and can weigh up to 2,000 pounds. While bison are big, they are deceptively fast and can run up to thirty-five miles per hour, so please stay in your vehicle anytime you are around them. While we do use the term bison and buffalo interchangeably, the North American scientific name is bison.
