Supporters of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) in Tingey County and Kapchorwa Municipality have taken to the streets to protest the recently declared results for the Woman MP and Tingey County parliamentary seats. The results were announced by the NRM District Registrar for Kapchorwa, Akram Kamonges, who is accused of declaring winners without presenting the official Declaration of Results (DR) forms.

Kamonges has since been arrested by angry NRM supporters who allegedly found him in possession of UGX 68 million in cash—suspected to be a bribe from the candidates he declared as winners. He is currently being held at Kapchorwa Central Police Station.

The Registrar had declared Phyllis Chemutai, the incumbent Woman MP, and Fadil Twalla, the incumbent MP for Tingey County, as winners. The protesters, carrying placards, marched from the police station to the office of the Resident District Commissioner (RDC), demanding the cancellation of the election results. They called on the NRM Electoral Commission to send a neutral team to oversee fresh elections and accused security personnel of bias during the process.

One of the candidates, Betty Kaali, accused Kamonges of accepting bribes and demanded the nullification of the election. Another candidate, Kenneth Soyekwo, contested the legitimacy of the results, stating that his opponent was declared winner without being issued a DR form.

Chemonges Kaali, an agent of one of the candidates, claimed they apprehended Kamonges at the home of a sub-county registrar, where they allegedly found UGX 68 million in cash, fake and blank DR forms, and an NRM stamp. He further accused Kamonges of inflating vote counts in several sub-counties.

RDC Martin Sekanga confirmed that there were indeed irregularities in the elections and attributed them to the District Registrar. He assured the public that investigations into the matter are underway.
