Background story:
During a family visit to the Tracy Aviary in Salt Lake City (@tracyaviary7832), we were the first ones through the gate that morning. The whole place echoed with this deep, resonant, almost percussive sound — like drums played in slow motion.
We followed the sound and found four Southern Ground Hornbills, each calling on their own pulse, overlapping in a kind of natural waltz rhythm. Yes, they are each making their own part of the beat and singing together for fun. It was haunting, beautiful, and oddly musical.
Later, I decided to record Bill Evans’ “Very Early” on my Casio Privia piano, using the hornbills’ calls as my rhythmic foundation. Their slow 3/4 pulse fit the piece perfectly. To hear this strange rhyhm we had to be pretty early to the aviary, so, it seemed right.
