Redesigning American City Flags - California's City Flags

The US flag is beautiful and some states have nice flags. We start from los angeles and go through san diego, san jose, san francisco, sacramento, then fresno, bakersfield, stockton and end with fontana, and moreno valley and many more along the way. As we all know, most of US city flags are very bad. There are some occasional exceptions. I’m going to go through the top 20 biggest cities in california by population. Creating new flags are not the highest priority of city governments, and its very hard to get the city’s attention. But good flags can be great branding of a city. If you can’t get your city to redo the flag, go ahead and do it yourself. Changes can come from the grassroots

Starting with Los Angeles, the city’s flag could be improved easily if we just remove the seal however i went for 3 slightly different ideas.

We move south to San Diego America’s finest city and my redesigns are all navy blue and white for the city’s importance to the US navy and the importance of the pacific ocean

Moving north to san jose where I added a rising white sun above a yellow field with a dark blue background.

Not too far north, we see San Franscisco and the first flag i gave them looks like a ukraine flag with the rising phoenix rising from the flames

Fresno serves as the economic hub of Fresno County and California's San Joaquin Valley. Fresno and the unincorporated area and rural cities surrounding it remain predominantly tied to large-scale agricultural production so I came up with this flag for the city

Moving to the state capital Sacramento, I came up with a few designs, the first one has a star to denote the city’s importance in california’s with two stripes are for the Sacramento and American Rivers

Long Beach has nice colors on their flag so I decided to relpace the seal with a sun and come up with 2 different sunny beach flag combinations

Oakland’s flag features a big green oak tree on their yellow flag so i tried using a more stylized oak tree and removing the city name and date

My Bakersfield’s design features a yellow banner with a cross made up of the black color for the oil production and green for the agriculture

Then we have Anaheim which changed their flag recently to A dark blue background with a horizontal light blue line and six white stars that represent Anaheim going forward.

Similar to Long Beach, santa ana uses a nice color scheme so i removed their seal and added a white sun in the middle while keeping the same diagonal color

Riverside is another city that recently changed their flag to a great flag in my opinion with a yellow bell tower against a dark navy blue background

We go back north again to Stockton where they have a deer on the city seal with a red and blue background divided vertically so I decided on 3 different flags

The city of irvine uses their sealon a white sheet, the seal features among other things the letter i in green so i decided to simplify it with a bright blue field and the letter i in white

The city of chula vista has a nice poland looking flag, I decided to remove the name of the city for my first attempt while keeping the general look
