Have you ever wanted to venture into the backcountry with your ebike but are unsure of the challenges you might need to face? Well, then this video is for you. You're in for a real treat. This video is packed with lessons to be learned, high drama and breathtaking landscapes.
The loop consists of the Big Elbow and Little Elbow Trails. There is some confusion regarding ebikes. I use Trailforks as my resource to begin selecting and planning a ride. In this instance, there is some confusion. Both the aforementioned trails are highlighted as ebike friendly and yet the combined loop, Elbow Trail Loop, appears not to be. This is contradictory. Nonetheless, based on past reviews from ebikers, I concluded that it was "good to go". Whilst on the trail, I encountered 2 other ebikers as well, so it appears fine. The trail is multi-use. Expect to encounter hikers, cyclists and horses. Behave responsibly and respectfully and you will not encounter any issues. The trail is generally wide enough for everybody.
The trail begins from the trailhead parking area which is about 90 minutes from Calgary and near to Forget Me Not pond in Kananaskis. You will need a day pass (CA$15) or an annual Kananaskis pass. These can be bought online on the day. The trail itself will take +4 hours to complete. Budget on 6 hours to account for stops, meals, and drama along the way. Remember that this is the backcountry. Pack and plan accordingly.
Regarding the various lessons to be learned from my video, I will be making a follow-up video to discuss these in more detail. All the issues can be mitigated. Do not let these things deter you from getting out into the wilderness.
Some notes on this ride:
Do the trail COUNTER-CLOCKWISE.
The ride-in is approximately a 50km journey with some very steep ascents. You may walk at times.
You will need a fully charged battery and likely need a backup battery as well.
Some benches and limited facilities exist at the Mt. Romulus backcountry campground. So, plan accordingly.
The trail consists mostly of double-track, some single-track and is very rocky in places.
Day or annual Kananaskis passes can be bought online https://conservationpass.alberta.ca/kcp
