What went wrong in your game?
*Early game (0:00–6:00):* You overinvested in cisterns and aqueducts very early (two cisterns and multiple aqueducts by 05:00) while floating resources and producing very little army. This slowed your military timing and failed to convert your strong income into map presence or pressure.
*06:00–12:00:* You floated large amounts of food, wood, stone, gold, and olive oil without clear spend timings. Your army stayed small and mismatched while your opponent massed upgraded spearmen, horsemen, and onna bugeisha. You delayed spending olive oil on mercenaries or impactful techs, missing a key Byzantine advantage.
*Mid game (12:00–18:00):* After losing a decisive fight around 13:00 (heavy villager and army losses), you continued investing in walls, olive groves, and a second TC instead of stabilizing with army. Despite floating large amounts of gold and olive oil, your army never recovered, allowing your opponent to repeatedly wipe units and raid villagers.
*18:00–24:00:* Even after another major loss, you still had a strong income and large resource bank, but did not convert it into a last defensive or comeback army. The game ended not due to lack of economy, but because resources were never turned into fighting power.
How could you improve?
*Early game (0:00–6:00):* Keep early infrastructure lean. One cistern network plus key eco techs is enough; delay extra aqueducts until you have consistent unit production. Choose a clear plan—early pressure or eco—not heavy infrastructure with minimal army.
*06:00–12:00:* Set strict spend rules. When resources rise above a few hundred, immediately queue units and upgrades. As Byzantines, actively spend olive oil on mercenaries and keep contracts running. Against spearmen, horsemen, and onna bugeisha, lean into archers with limitanei support and add blacksmith upgrades once production is steady.
*Mid game (12:00–18:00):* After losing a big fight, prioritize survival. Use banked resources for a fast re-max with cheap core units and a mercenary spike. Delay second TC and excess walls until you can defend your economy. Commit either to a rebuild timing push or an age-up—don’t sit on resources.
*18:00–24:00:* When behind but rich, treat stored resources as a comeback tool. Spend nearly everything on a focused army that counters the opponent and take one decisive fight before considering surrender.
How do better players handle this?
*Early game:* Strong Byzantine players invest in economy but stop short of overbuilding. They hit Feudal quickly, add military immediately, and delay excessive aqueduct chains until unit production is online.
*06:00–12:00:* Experts rapidly convert eco advantages into army, upgrades, and pressure. They may float some stone or olive oil, but food, gold, and production buildings stay busy. Against Japanese aggression, they rely on a ranged backbone with anti-cavalry support.
*Mid game:* Strong players either press winning fights decisively or, after losses, cut greed and pour everything into a rebuilt army plus critical upgrades. Byzantine eco bonuses and mercenaries are used to swing fights—not to sit on large resource banks.
