In this Derby then and now I'm flying over Cheapside looking southwest down onto where Curzon Street connects with Wardwick, Friargate and Cheapside.
Creating this then and now was extremely challenging, trying to line up longitude, latitude, Altitude, Vertical camera angle, Rotation, Lens size, focal depth and aspect ratio, pixel matching spread with the original photo was a very time consuming process so I was very pleased to see how it turned out.
Road layout - Cheapside emerging from the bottom, Wardwick to the left, Friargate travelling off to the right and Curzon Street going off into the horizon.
So what can we see in both views, in the bottom right St Werburg's church a Grade II listed Angican church dating from the 17th century, most famous for being where Samuel Johnson (writer of the English Dictionary) got married to Elizabeth Porter in 1735.
Another prominent building in the centre of the view today is the Grade II listed Derby City Church but was built in 1854 as a Temperance Hall, designed by Harry I Stevens.
Interesting to note that on the right side of Curzon Street only the corner (white L shaped building) survives, all the others have been demolished.
The odd building at 120 Friargate which looks more like a 60s building with the flat roof in 1947 was Simpsons Printers.
On the corner of Curzon Street and Bramble Street was WGH Baker Ltd, today this building is The Golden Lamb restaurant.
Shops on Wardwick in 1947 are Hollywood Hats, Derby property owners association I cant quite make out the names on the other shops.
49-55 Wardwick are Grade II listed buildings built mid 18th Century.
Notice the large advertising hoardings, one at the bottom on Wardwick and another half way up on the right side of Curzon Street. There is a trolleybus on The Wardwick heading to Ashbourne road and following it is a double decker bus.
Its not lined up quite right as the houses on Bramble street move forward between the two images but Im willing to put up with that as overall it lines up.

Past & Present - in fading Photographs.
High quality resolution fading photos showing local scenes as they were and how they are today from exactly the same view point. Then and now, Now and then, Past and Present, Old and New, Before and After. Call it what you want, just try one and see the effect!
The presentations you can see here are the result of many hours of work put in by myself ensuring that the old and new photographs line up precisely, I don't publish any if I'm not 100% happy with the match.

Please note that the Then & now section on my website is currently in need of a revamp as they were all created back in 2005 using Flash and this is no longer supported so I will have to recreate all of my work again using a different method. In the meantime I'm publishing them on my YouTube channel like this one.
Best viewed on a large computer screen or smart TV as this is recorded in 4K resolution with great music so a real waste watching it on a small phone screen. Did you know you can cast it to your smart tv from the YouTube app?
