Derby Then and now : Ashbourne Road, Friar Gate junction and Uttoxeter Old Road 1904 to 2024 | 4K

Описание: In this Derby then and now I’m standing near the corner of Ashbourne Road at its junction with Uttoxeter Old Road and Friar Gate, Im looking west towards down Ashbourne Road in the direction of Markeaton park.
I had to take my "now" photo very early one Sunday morning as the "then" photo was taken in the middle of the road.
The view is of the shops on the corner which back in the day was referred to as "Goodalls corner" due to there being a very popular butchers which occupied a few of the buildings on that corner since the 1880's.
Since Goodalls moved out in 2014 these shops have been many different things, most recently Blarneys which opened in March 2025.
Further down Ashbourne Road on the right in the 1904 photo you can see a congressional church that was built in 1865 called Victoria Mission Hall, this building was damaged by a fire in 1994 and was demolished in 2001 and some apartments built on the plot called 1018 in 2002.
Notice the old tramlines in the road for the electric trams, these were removed in the late 60's.

in the distance on the left side of the old photo you can see a spire, this was a wooden tower on top of Ashgate school built 1879, this tower suffered from a fire so was removed around 1920. today the tower just has a flat top there.

I drive through this junction every single day for over 30 years and I wish it was as quiet as it is in the 1904 view !

Please note that the Then & now section on my website is currently in need of a revamp as they were all created back in 2005 using Flash and this is no longer supported so I will have to recreate all of my work again using a different method. In the meantime Im publishing then on my YouTube channel like this one.
