This lecture focuses on Late Modernism, explaining how it evolved from earlier Modernist principles while developing new expressive directions. It contrasts Late Modernism with Postmodernism and introduces two major tendencies: Sculptural Expressionism (seen in works by Eero Saarinen, Jorn Utzon, and Santiago Calatrava) and Geometric Expressionism (strongly represented by Louis Kahn and I.M. Pei).
The lecture also discusses key ideas such as articulation, the “white aesthetic” of Richard Meier, and the continuation of modernist principles in contemporary architecture. Through examples like the TWA Terminal, Sydney Opera House, National Assembly at Dhaka, Kimbell Art Museum, and the Louvre Pyramid, it shows how form, structure, geometry, light, and materials became powerful expressive tools in Late Modern architecture.
