Farid-ud-din Masud Ganjshakar (commonly known as Baba Farid) was born in 1173 (or 1188 as per written on his Darbar) in Kothiwal village which is 10 km from Multan (West Punjab). His Father's name was Jamal-ud-din Suleiman and mother's name was Maryam Bibi who was also called as Qarsum Bibi.

He commonly known as Baba Sheikh Farid or Baba Farid Ji. He was a 12th-century Sufi preacher and saint of the Chishti Order of South Asia. He is generally recognized as the first major poet of the Punjabi language and is considered one of the great saints of the Punjab. The ever first Punjabi poetry available today, was written by Him.

He is one of the fifteen Sikh bhagats and selections from his work are included in the Sri Guru Granth Sahib. His poetry in Sri Guru Granth Sahib includes four Shabads (hymns) and 112 Shlokas. Jeshi Ram Mushtaq took his Shaloks from Granth Sahib and published them as a separate book of Shaloks.
Baba ji died in 1266 and his tomb is in Pakpattan (West Punjab). Baba Farid is respected equally among Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs.
