(19 Aug 2018) Almost 100 children arrived in Dusseldorf in Germany on Sunday in order to be treated in German hospitals.
Volunteers from the German Red Cross and the aid group Friedensdorf International assisted 88 children, most of whom arrived from Afghanistan.
The German Red Cross carried 24 children to hospitals in ambulances, while some of the children were transported directly to the Friedensdorf accommodation in Oberhausen.
Thomas Jacobs, Head of Friedensdorf International which provides aid for children from war-torn regions and crisis areas said the mission encountered obstacles.
"We received the prospect of visas for Afghan children relatively late from the Foreign Office in Berlin," he said.
The children were suffering from varying conditions such as open wounds, diseases and life-threatening inflammations resulting from poverty or fighting.
Johannes Stegmann, a head of operations at the Red Cross in Germany, said that reduced personnel in hospitals on Sundays means some children will wait until next week to be taken to the clinics.
The delay caused an additional cost of 40,000 euros (approximately 45,800 US dollars) due to expenses incurred in hiring a charter plane company.
Jacobs said that Germany's hospital operators offer free treatment to the children.
"For postoperative care, the children are then admitted to the Peace Village in Oberhausen, where they are also prepared for their later return to their home countries," explained Jacobs.
