Sun Tzu, who wrote The Art of War, said: “Attack is the secret of defense, and defense is the planning of an attack.”
Scientists who study behavior often describe three main reactions to danger. A human or an animal may fight, run away, or freeze.
This means there is a third state. If you are not attacking and not defending, you may be in a freeze state.
In chess, this can look like a player who cannot decide on a move. The clock keeps running. The player thinks and overthinks but does not act.
