Carl Jung said, “What you resist, persists.”
This is a wise idea. It means that when you feel fear, fighting the fear adds more pressure to the fear you already feel. In this way, resisting fear can make the problem bigger.
The more you resist cravings, the stronger the cravings become.
If you have intrusive thoughts, resisting them can make them happen more often. It can also make them feel stronger.
Sigmund Freud said, “Unexpressed emotions will never die. They are buried alive and will come forth later in uglier ways.”
You cannot bury emotions and expect them to disappear. If you push them down, they often come back later, and sometimes they come back stronger.
