An Introvert at a Conference

Introvert: a person who gets their energy from being by themselves rather than with other people. Can enjoy socialising but is quickly drained and must seek alone time to recharge.

Last month I attended my first international academic conference! It was exciting, it was enormous, it was on the other side of the world, and I was expected to ‘network’ and ‘socialise’ and ‘get to know people’. As an introvert this is the exact opposite of a good time for me and I had anticipated I would struggle, so I video diary’d the experience to share. If you’re an introverted academic, I hope this will help you see you’re not alone, and if you’re an extrovert, I hope this will help you understand why some conference-goers go home and hide at the end of each day!

The conference was Goldschmidt 2018, the world’s largest geochemistry conference, this year hosted in Boston.
