Flying online with VATSIM is great practice and can be very rewarding and may improve real life flying skills like navigating, operating aircraft systems, complying with fast paced ATC, and general radio verbiage. However, your first flight may seem daunting, and the set up complicated. In this tutorial, I will show you how I usually get started, flying from Chicago Midway(KMDW) to Minneapolis(KMSP) in the Captain Sim 757-200 in Prepar3Dv4.5 with storms enroute. Note that the 20-30 mins of the video is mostly set up and execution for getting online, but the rest will show you my communications with ATC and how the approach/landing/taxi went if you'd like to get an idea of a more-or-less standard flight with several different controllers online.
To get started, first join VATSIM at https://www.vatsim.net/join. You will have to wait a little bit for your rating to change from "Observer" to "Pilot" once you join, so get started now and keep your username/password in a safe place for reference as you'll need them for other programs. Next, download:
FLAI package at http://flai.bvartcc.com/
Vpilot at http://vpilot.metacraft.com/

Simbrief downloader at https://www.simbrief.com/home/index.p...

Other products used in this video, all of which I recommend, are FlyTampa's MDW scenery, Flightbeam Studio's MSP scenery, Captain Sim's 757, PTA(new shaders), Active Sky(weather engine) and REX Skyforce(cloud/sky textures).
