Il pontefice attuò, in realtà, un progetto risalente al 1570 che prevedeva di ornare con fontane pubbliche le piazze più importanti della città attraversate dal ristrutturato Acquedotto Vergine.
La fontana fu commissionata a Pietro Bernini (1562-1629), architetto dell’Acqua Vergine dal 1623 e padre del più celebre Gian Lorenzo (1598-1680) con il quale non è da escludere vi sia stata una collaborazione.
Pietro Bernini progettò una fontana assolutamente nuova rispetto alle opere realizzate a Roma alla fine del XVI secolo; si ispirò, infatti, ad una barca, ideando un’opera più scultorea che architettonica. La singolare vasca a forma di imbarcazione raccoglie l’acqua che fuoriesce da due grandi soli - collocati internamente allo scafo a prua e a poppa - e quella che zampilla da un piccolo catino centrale. L’acqua straripante dai fianchi della barca, aperti in modo da offrire l’impressione che stia affondando, viene raccolta da un bacino sottostante nel quale confluiscono anche i getti provenienti da bocche di finte cannoniere poste all’esterno della prua e della poppa, ai lati dei grandi stemmi papali caratterizzati dalle api, simbolo della famiglia Barberini.
L'ultimo restauro è stato realizzato nel 2013 – 2014, mentre ad aprile 2025 è stato completato un intervento di manutenzione straordinaria nell’ambito del piano PNRR – Caput Mundi.

In the centre of Piazza di Spagna, at the foot of the spectacular Spanish Steps, is the fountain built between 1626 and 1629 by Pietro Bernini, father of the famous Gian Lorenzo, whose intervention cannot be excluded.
It was commissioned by Pope Urban VIII Barberini, who implemented a project of 1570 relating to the construction of public fountains in the main squares of Rome crossed by the renovated Virgin Aqueduct. The Aqueduct had too low pressure to allow the creation of jets or waterfalls. The problem was solved thanks to the masterful idea of building a fountain that looked like a boat immersed in water, placed below the street level.
The Fontana della Barcaccia (Barcaccia Fountain) owes its name to the original project by Bernini. He designed an almost sculptural artwork, with wavy lines, inspired by a boat, and innovative compared to those built until then in the city. The theme of the monument refers to the flood of 1598, which allowed the boats to reach the place where the fountain now stands.
The unusual boat-shaped basin receives the water poured from an elongated central basin and two large suns, placed internally in the bow and stern of the hull. From the sides, realized to give the impression that the boat is sinking, the water overflows into the large basin below.
