My daughter was born and raised abroad, so she doesn’t handle spicy food as well as kids who’ve grown up in Korea. However, she loves tteokbokki and often asks me to make it for her. No matter how mild I make it, she always mixes it with milk to make it even creamier and less spicy. So, I eventually started making rosé tteokbokki with heavy cream for her.
Rosé tteokbokki is slightly different from traditional tteokbokki. The addition of creamy ingredients like milk or heavy cream pairs wonderfully with sausages. If you plan to add fish cakes, make sure to blanch them in boiling water to remove any fishy smell.
This dish can be made quickly and easily with ingredients you can find in most international grocery stores (the tteok, or rice cakes, is a must-have and unfortunately can’t be substituted). It’s perfect for anyone who wants a rich, delicious twist on the classic dish. Try it out—it’s absolutely delicious! (By the way, this has nothing to do with BLACKPINK’s Rosé. 😉)
[Ingredients]
• 1 ¾ cups (400 ml) water
• ¾ cup (200 ml) heavy cream
• 2 tablespoons fine Korean chili powder (gochugaru)
• 2 tablespoons brown sugar
• 1 tablespoon sriracha sauce
• ½ teaspoon curry powder
• 1 teaspoon MSG
• 1 tablespoon Korean chili paste (gochujang)(optional)
• 2 slices of toast cheese
• 9 oz (250 g) rice cakes (tteok), rinsed
• Sausage of your choice
• Black pepper to taste
[Tips for Cooking]
1. Prepare the rice cakes : Rinse the tteok thoroughly. For a softer texture, soak them in warm water for about 10 minutes before cooking.
2. Choose the right sausage: Use a mild-flavored sausage to complement the creamy sauce.
3. Adjust the spice level: You can control the heat by tweaking the amount of gochujang. If you prefer a milder dish, feel free to omit it entirely.
This creamy, mildly spicy rosé tteokbokki is sure to be a hit, especially for those who love rich and comforting flavors. Give it a try—you won’t regret it!
