In this episode, I talk through what smallholders often see when rats start becoming a regular issue in oil palm blocks, missing loose fruits, bite marks on bunches, damage to young palms, and nests under stacked fronds. I also refer to a Johor field study reporting high levels of internal worms in wild rats. The day to day issue on farms is hygiene and where rats find food and shelter. When rats move between rubbish areas, stores, drains, and rest spots, droppings can contaminate work areas and food.
I then share practical steps suited to smallholders, keep ramps and stores tidy, keep food and drinking water covered, collect loose fruits when possible, manage frond stacks so they do not become long nesting lines, trap regularly in hotspots, handle carcasses using gloves or a plastic bag, dispose away from water sources, wash hands with soap before eating and after field work, wear boots in wet areas, and keep areas clean to reduce cockroaches and beetles.
