This One's a Keeper! ❤️ Shopping Vintage Deals in 1810s Utopia

They’re on the street, they’re in the gym, they’re in the shop—and even the cafeteria! “They” are the deals we’re picking as we shop the annual antique show in the 1810s town of New Harmony, Indiana. We’ve set aside the second weekend each June for this event, and we’re combing it for bargains rescued from area farmsteads, fine homes in nearby Evansville, and jewelry boxes procured by the resellers setting up in this antique lover’s destination!

Xeno and I start with a look at the outdoor dealers, who are feverishly setting up before the crowds arrive. Big colorful signs, primitive dough bowls and horse troughs, and a cool 1910s cast iron mailbox rest among rusty relics, while another booth with pretty embroidery and a fine antique sampler is run by a woman whose modern needle art and upholstery studio is just down the street! Antique malls and shops are part of the New Harmony landscape, as are Owenite communal buildings from the town’s beginning as a utopia… Xeno leads us to Indiana’s oldest library, where a book sale is on as part of the weekend events.

Then, the bell tolls from the old Ribeyre Auditorium, telling us the dealers are ready for us to shop their best! We’re looking for deals on things our collectors like, and find them—a Miss America compote, an inverted bead 1960s brooch, and a 1920s Fenton stretch bowl are too good to pass! But we’re also enjoying the splendid variety of everything from firehouse collectibles to primitives to toys, and MCM pottery we encounter on our wanderings.

1950s kitchen chef containers seem right at home near Uhl crocks and tole-painted kitchen wood and tinware here. Primitives rescued from local barns show us how real old painted furniture should look, and possum belly cabinets, old store counters, and Hoosier kitchen queens all seem to be selling well! We discover Uhl chairs (not related to the crocks, but significant), Juliana jewelry, and a 1920s Czech crewel bag—and the frog that launched a TV network!

There’s lots to learn at this place, with antiques seldom seen… an 1890s wax portrait plaque, Roseville Tourmaline glaze, and a pair of identical ceramic vases with backstops from two companies a continent away from each other all have stories to tell! We contemplate life before vacuum cleaners when we encounter a rug beater, imagine the chocolate goodies that came out of some 1940s holiday molds, and remember when Heinz soup dispensers graced the counters of roadside diners.

So much to see at this antique event in one of America’s most singular towns! With this year’s sale coming this weekend, it’s our pleasure to show you the highlights of our last visit—and whet your appetite for more fun in New Harmony to come.
