Thrifting Dreams Come True! Shopping 45 Yard Sales in One Day!

What’s better than finding vintage at a yard sale? Finding tons of vintage at a bunch of yard sales—that would be the answer! That’s what Seattle’s Mount Baker District has on tap at its annual community-wide yard sale event, where 45 families are putting out their castoffs and leftovers… and half a dozen emphasize VINTAGE in their ads. So what will we find?

We know a lot of shoppers will hit this early, so we scan the ads to see which promises the most vintage… and we guess right! In a backyard under a covered patio, a super collector is thinning out tables full of everything from vintage vinyl and Valentines to antique prints, vintage costume jewelry, and a fun 1950s Niagara massage pad for home or auto! We’re combing this one thoroughly, making a pile that includes a one-of-a-kind 1930s boat sketch, fab 50s Easter bunnies and gift wrap, a pretty Czech necklace from the 1930s, and a really good Trifari crown mark pin. We gladly drop $80 to get a great variety of fun collectibles to suit many different collectors.

Things move fast at community yard sales, and so do we! Our next stop turns up an interesting 1950s Japanese ad poster for Camel Cigarettes, along with a pair of Stangl 1930s relish trays made for Toastmaster that are priced at just $3 each! We hit the neighboring sales and then head to a row of waterfront-view homes built in the 1920s.

There’s vintage aplenty in these houses, too! Popular Pyrex and Portmeirion fill one sale, while another offers a Jonasson paperweight, Nippon downs, English china, and studio pottery… but at a price. These folks clearly have money and know the value of these items—but they’re missing out on the fact that they’re selling at a yard sale. So, as much as we love some of their stuff (the hybrid man-elephant-pig-bird lamp from the 1950s was almost a must-have, even at $75!), we decide to head back to the more modest part of the neighborhood in search of better deals.

Our penultimate stop isn’t planned, but a table of gleaming crystal and silver plate tempts us to stop. The candelabra pair at $50 isn’t horribly priced, but we’ve been getting such good deals that we decide to head on to the last of the homes promoting vintage, held in a 1950s garage. A hairpin bench and a 1970s desk for $10 greet us at the entry, and we look through classic 1950s metal trays, antique bottles, and a really good 1950s art glass decanter that just needs the right stopper before we see our last buy of the morning. Sitting among higher-priced crackle glass is a deep forest green Pilgrim ewer, designed by the Moretti Brothers of Murano in their early efforts for the West Virginia firm… and it’s only $5!

Then it’s home to see the haul and revel in our good fortune! Our total spend is under $100, and we believe that happy collectors will want to put these things in their collections! Plus, we end up with a really good costume jewelry reference for just $5—an investment we expect will repay us many times over.
