Take your okra to the next level! In this video, I show you how to pound fresh okra pods, coat them in egg wash and seasoned cornmeal, and fry them to golden, crispy perfection.
Perfect as a snack, side dish, or Southern-inspired treat — this method locks in flavor and keeps the okra tender on the inside with a crunchy exterior.
Ingredients:
450 g (1 lb) fresh okra
2 large eggs
180 g (1 1/2 cup) cornmeal (fine or medium grind)
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp onion powder
3/4 teaspoon garlic powder
3/4 tsp black pepper
3/4 tsp paprika
1/4 tsp turmeric
Dash of Tabasco Sauce (optional)
Oil for frying (vegetable or peanut oil recommended)
🥄 Instructions:
Prep the okra: Wash and dry the okra thoroughly. Cut off tips. Pound with a meat mallet to open.
Make the egg wash: In a bowl, beat the eggs until smooth.
Make the seasoned coating: In a separate bowl, combine the cornmeal, salt, onion powder, black pepper, paprika, tabasco (if using), and turmeric. Mix well.
Coat the okra: Dip okra pieces into the beaten eggs. Then toss them in the seasoned cornmeal mixture, coating evenly. Press gently to help the coating stick.
Heat the oil: Add about 1½ to 2 inches (4–5 cm) of oil to a deep skillet or pan. Heat to 350°F (175°C).
Fry the okra: Fry in batches for 3–4 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crispy.
Drain & serve: Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Season with a light pinch of salt while hot, if desired.
🍽️ Serving Ideas:
Serve with ranch, hot sauce, tomato jam, or a lemon-garlic aioli.
Great alongside fried chicken, fish, or Southern-style meals.
