*The Lord is my shepherd: In this video, we will read and explore the meaning behind Psalm chapter 23—“The Lord the Shepherd of His People”, a psalm/poem by David.
When David said “The Lord is my shepherd” what did he mean by that? Why did he describe God as his “shepherd”? We can answer this by going back to 1 Samuel 16 when we are first introduced to David. Before becoming king, David was a shepherd boy tending his father’s sheep in Bethlehem (1 Samuel 17: 15). As a shepherd, he took great care of his flock by providing, guiding and fearlessly protecting his sheep from harm, like bears and lions (1 Samuel 17: 34 - 35). And much of what he learned from leading sheep, he used in most of his poetry as creative examples. So when we read again “The Lord is my shepherd”, we can understand why he used this analogy. David saw God as his protector, caretaker, provider and guide—just like how the shepherd is to their sheep. In the next verses of Psalm 23, David is referring to the peace that comes from trusting and having faith in God. He trusted that God would lead him to the right path and supply him with all that he needed. He also believed that God would take care of him even in the midst of his enemies. He trusted that God would deliver him out of his challenges and turn his negative situation into a blessing. And, like David, when we also trust and have faith in God we can go through life knowing that whatever challenges we may face, God will always be with us, providing just what we need in his perfect timing. Jesus said in John 10: 11, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.”
