Описание: Cervical cancer affects 500,000 women each year and about 55% of women die. Barriers to care include lack of screening equipment and fear of the speculum exam. The modern speculum, a key gynecological tool, was invented over 150 years ago and no significant change has been made. In this talk, Mercy Asiedu describes a novel device, the Callascope, for examining the cervix and inner female reproductive anatomy without the speculum. The Callascope can be used by a health provider or the patients themselves, thus opening up a whole new area for self-examination of the cervix. Dr. Mercy Asiedu is currently a postdoctoral research fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of technology. Prior to this, she received her PhD from Dr. Nimmi Ramanujam's Center for Global Women's Health Technologies at Duke, where her research focussed on developing tools to increase access to cervical cancer screening. Overall she is passionate about using technologies to democratize health care. Today she shares some of the work she did while at Duke, through her talk titled: The Invisible organ. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
