Driving with your phone in your hand now illegal in South Carolina under new law

Описание: SOUTH CAROLINA (WCIV) — It’s time to put the phone down when you get in your car. Starting Sept. 1, 2025, the Hands-free And Distracted Driving Act is in effect, cracking down on distracted driving in an attempt to keep roads safer. The law was signed in mid-May and ratified by the legislature.

"A text message or a phone call is not worth your life," Corporal Nick Pye, South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

“It’s 2025, it is hard to drive distraction-free even outside of cell phones, whether you're mentally distracted, your vehicle's distracting you, the radio, whatever it is, you have to do the right thing. You have to use common sense,” he said.

Drivers in South Carolina are no longer to have their phones in their hands while driving. Under the law, drivers are prohibited from holding or supporting a mobile electronic device with any part of their body, including placing it on your lap. That means no texting, emailing, watching videos, browsing apps, or watching video calls while driving.

However, there are important exceptions. Drivers can use voice-activated or hands-free features such as Bluetooth calls, voice-to-text, or factory-integrated systems like Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Listening to navigation, music, or podcasts is okay, so long as the device isn’t being held.
