Growth in private practice doesn’t always come from adding more skills sometimes it comes from letting go.
In Episode 4 of Latinx Collective Conversations, Kathy Acosta, LCSW and Vanessa De Jesus Guzman, LPC, NCC talk honestly about the roles and identities they had to release to grow into sustainable, confident private practice owners.
This episode is for Latinx clinicians and therapists who feel stretched thin, overcommitted, or stuck in patterns that once helped them survive, but now make business ownership feel heavy. Kathy and Vanessa explore letting go of being the yes person, the overgiver, the one who figures everything out alone, and the version of themselves shaped by cultural expectations around sacrifice, humility, and responsibility.
They reflect on how many of these roles were learned early as survival skills - especially for first-generation clinicians - and why shedding them can feel uncomfortable, emotional, and even disloyal. The conversation covers boundaries in private practice, saying no to misaligned opportunities, niching intentionally, and choosing sustainability without guilt. This episode also highlights the identity shifts required to build a practice that supports both professional growth and personal life.
Latinx Collective Conversations exists to share the real conversations that often happen behind the scenes... about mindset, identity, leadership, money, and building a private practice that supports the life you want, not just your credentials.

ABOUT THE LATINX PRACTICE COLLECTIVE
The Latinx Practice Collective is a national community for Latinx clinicians and private practice owners. We support therapists as they move from clinician to confident business owner through coaching, systems, education, vetted resources, referrals, and meaningful connection. Our work centers cultural context and the belief that private practice was never meant to be built alone.
