Robert Holgate was born in 1481. Following a long and distinguished career at Cambridge University Robert went on to become Bishop of Llandaff in Wales on 25th March 1537. In the year of 1545 he was to be made Archbishop of York where he remained in post until 1554 before being imprisoned in the tower by Queen Mary I and stripped of his post for breaking his vow of celibacy.
Robert was to pay the crown £1000 for his crimes and was duly released in January 1555, however he sadly died on 15th November 1555. In his last will and testament he bequeathed money and founded a hospital and Almshouses in Hemsworth to be built and maintained for the future.
In the late 17th century it became commonplace for residents of the almshouses to wear a silver almshouse badge upon the sleeve of their clothing. Now see for yourself an extremely rare surviving silver almshouse badge dated to 1687 from the hospital founded by Archbishop Robert Holgate back in the year of 1555 AD that I discovered recently.
