We've all heart of folic acid, it's pretty benign, right? Wrong!
This is important to understand if you tend to eat a standard American diet, or your kids and family do.
Folic acid is man-made. It was initially suggested by Monsanto to be added to our grains and became law in 1998 that grains had to be enriched with folic acid to prevent neural tube defects in developing embryos.
No distinction was made between the man-made substance and the "real thing" which is folate. Folate is naturally occurring in nature and can be found in green veggies, citrus and beans.
Due to our diet high in refined carbohydrates and ultra-processed food, it's pretty easy to exceed the recommended amount of folic acid daily. It's just 1 mg or 1,000 mcg and if you go above that you can increase your risk of colorectal cancer, you can disrupt your DNA and literally affect future generations through epigenetic reprogramming affecting your DNA.
Folate, the good guy of this story, repairs DNA, helps in DNA synthesis and methylation (improves immunity and beneficially affects gene expression and protein function).
The human body is such a beautiful complex machine. It really doesn't like to be fooled by artificial substances. Have you noticed that? This story is just one amongst hundreds of the human body emphatically stating that it would really prefer that we stick with the real thing - in this case folate and NOT folic acid.
