THE CO-PILOT PROJECT: MEDICAL MISSIONS AND DOCTOR TRAINING
In 2016, Dr. Tomycz started an initiative called the Co-Pilot Project, in collaboration with the non-profit organization Razom for Ukraine.
This project began with an exploratory mission trip to Ukraine in August 2016, where Dr. Tomycz worked alongside neurosurgeons in Kyiv who had reached out to him regarding certain cases.
Together, they examined over 100 patients and performed multiple procedures. Dr. Tomycz was deeply moved by the lack of access to high-quality surgical programs for Ukrainian patients with complex neurovascular lesions, epilepsy, spinal deformities, and brain and spine tumors.
This experience inspired Dr. Tomycz to develop a mentoring program to train young Ukrainian neurosurgeons.
This initiative has since grown into Razom Health, dedicated to providing medical training and performing complex surgeries in Ukraine.
To date, Dr. Tomycz has traveled to Ukraine over forty times and participated hundreds of surgeries.
During the recent Russian invasion of Ukraine, Razom Health received an outpouring of support from American and Canadian organizations, as well as numerous doctors who volunteered their time and expertise.
This collaboration has been invaluable in providing much-needed medical assistance to Ukraine during this challenging time.
We are honored to announce that TIME magazine has included Razom Health, a project spearheaded by Dr. Tomycz, on its prestigious TIME 100 Health List! 🎉 And we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who have supported Razom Health in its mission to improve healthcare in Ukraine.
**** The Co-Pilot Project (CPP) addresses the significant deficit in high-quality neurosurgical, spine, reconstructive, and plastic surgery training in Ukraine. Just as a co-pilot acts as another set of eyes and ears for the pilot, our mission is to send surgeons from North America to mentor and aid Ukrainian surgeons through difficult cases.
We aim to raise the level of medical and surgical care in Ukraine through the following efforts:
Trips by American physicians and exchange of expertise
Provision of critical equipment aimed at building programs
Training opportunities and observerships for Ukrainian surgeons outside of Ukraine

PROJECT HISTORY
After an exploratory mission trip to Ukraine in August 2016, Dr. Tomycz and his colleagues are convinced that the best way to develop high-quality Ukrainian subspecialty surgical programs is to help train young surgeons through mentoring relationships.
During the initial trip, Luke Tomycz was able to work with neurosurgeons in Kyiv for over a week, examining over 100 patients and performing multiple procedures. Dr. Tomycz was struck by the number of patients with complex neurovascular lesions, epilepsy, spinal deformities, and tumors of the brain and spine who either do not receive any treatment or undergo ineffectual and potentially dangerous operations with surgeons who often lack appropriate expertise.
With the beginning of the full-scale russian invasion of Ukraine in Spring 2022, many American and Canadian organizations and initiatives have reached out to Razom and Co-Pilot Project expressing desire to help with performing complex surgeries and training Ukrainian doctors. We are grateful to all the organizations that we have partnered with and all the doctors who have volunteered their time and skills to help Ukraine in such difficult time.
