During a NewsX debate on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s response to the recent International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling of South Africa’s case against Israel for alleged genocide against Palestinians, Sandeep Chachra, Executive Director of ActionAid Association, highlighted that 88 countries from the Global South supported the South African case. He mentioned that the ICJ, recognised as the most authoritative and respected of international courts, issued a provisional measure indicating potential genocidal acts by Israel. Yet, he also cautioned that while the judgment is binding, it lacks an implementation mechanism. Chachra emphasized the growing isolation of Israel diplomatically, as the ICJ ruling intensifies pressures on the nation and its armed supporters. He also remarked that the court underscored the absence of a clear distinction between combatants and non-combatants, raising concerns about the safety of Palestinians, particularly women and children.
