In a conversation with Mirror Now, Vandana Burder, Programme Officer at ActionAid Association, shed light on the persistent challenges of menstrual hygiene in schools, emphasizing the critical issues contributing to girls missing school. She addressed period poverty, the affordability of sanitary napkins as well as the role of gender budgeting and sensitisation at the state and central levels of government to support menstrual hygiene and eradicate the stigma. Vandana highlights Scotland’s recent decision to provide free sanitary pads and underscores the importance of state and central measures of budging for community and school toilets. She mentioned ActionAid Association’s “SchoolWithoutFear” campaign aimed at mapping school infrastructure, addressing the hindrances to education caused by inadequate sanitation, and combating abuse. She also mentioned how young girls are become leaders of change within their communities through this campaign by spreading awareness about sexual and reproductive health.
