This is Watergrove parkrun near Rochdale! If you're looking for a parkrun that's less about PB hunting and more about epic views and a proper challenge, this one's got your name on it.
The Course: Get ready for some serious elevation! Watergrove is famous for its hills – we're talking around 350 feet of gain over 5k, making it one of the hilliest parkruns out there. It's an "out and back" course in a "Y" shape, meaning you'll see fellow parkrunners doubling back, which is always a nice boost. The terrain is a mix of loose and stony bridleways, and yes, the infamous cobbles! As someone who works on Coronation Street, those cobbles definitely felt familiar underfoot – a true taste of Northern grit, especially if they're wet!
This course is fantastic for:
Trail runners: If you love varied terrain and a proper climb, you'll be in your element.
Strength builders: Those hills are leg-burners in the best way, fantastic for building power.
View seekers: Seriously, the vistas are incredible. You'll be treated to panoramic views of Watergrove Reservoir, Rochdale, and even Manchester on a clear day.
Walkers: Don't be deterred by the hills! Many walk sections, and the views make every step worth it.
Location: Watergrove Reservoir is high up on the edge of the moors above Rochdale. It's not a typical "park" but a stunning reservoir in the heart of the Pennines, offering a wild and ancient feel. You truly feel like you're out in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by nature and even sharing the route with hardy sheep (who sometimes act as marshals!).
Parking: There's a large car park near the start, which is a huge plus. However, be warned: the road leading up to it can be a bit of a rutted, potholed, cobbled track. Drive carefully, especially if you don't have a high-clearance vehicle! Many locals suggest parking in Wardle village and walking up as a warm-up, which might be a smart move.
Facilities: This is where Watergrove keeps it simple. There are no public toilet facilities directly at the parkrun start. So, plan ahead! However, after your run, you can head to Charlie's Coffee and Cakes in Wardle village (135 Ramsden Road, OL12 9NX) for that essential post-parkrun brew and well-earned cake. It's a friendly spot where many parkrunners gather.
The volunteers are fantastic, and there's a real camaraderie among runners tackling those hills together. It's a parkrun with massive character that truly makes you feel like you've earned that finish token!
So, if you're up for a proper physical and visual treat, lace up your trail shoes (or just your regular ones, but be mindful!), embrace the climbs, and soak in the views at Watergrove. You won't regret it!
