Описание:
The Odyssey is one of the oldest and most influential epic poems in Western literature. Attributed to Homer and composed in ancient Greek around the 8th century BC, the poem stands at the foundation of the Western storytelling tradition.
This video presents The Odyssey Book 1 in clear, plain English, designed to make Homer’s epic easy to understand and enjoyable to listen to while driving, working, studying, or doing everyday tasks.
Set in the aftermath of the Trojan War, The Odyssey follows the long and perilous journey of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, as he struggles to return home after ten years of war. Along the way he encounters shipwrecks, monsters, witches, divine intervention, and the temptation of immortality itself.
Meanwhile in Ithaca, his wife Penelope and son Telemachus endure growing danger as ruthless suitors consume the household and plot for the throne.
Blending adventure, myth, psychological depth, and reflections on loyalty, identity, and homecoming, The Odyssey has shaped storytelling for nearly three thousand years. Its influence can be seen in epic fantasy, modern novels, film, and countless hero’s-journey narratives.
Though its origins lie in the oral tradition of ancient Greece, The Odyssey remains one of the most enduring explorations of what it means to wander, to suffer, and ultimately, to return home.
Book 9 Summary:
Odysseus begins telling his story by recounting how he and his men were trapped in the cave of the Cyclops Polyphemus, who devoured several of his companions. Using cunning rather than strength, Odysseus tricks the giant, blinds him with a burning olive stake, and escapes by hiding beneath the Cyclops’ sheep. As he sails away, however, Odysseus reveals his true name in pride, bringing down the curse of Poseidon upon his journey home.
