As schools open across South Africa, millions of children return to classrooms while still facing hunger, malnutrition, and unhealthy food environments.
In October 2024, HEALA convened the Schools Food Environment Assembly in Johannesburg, bringing together 280 participants from civil society, government, academia, communities, educators, food suppliers, and learners.
South Africa faces a dual burden of malnutrition:• 1 in 4 children is stunted• 1 in 8 children is overweight or obese
The National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP) feeds over 9.6 million learners and remains one of the country’s most effective anti-poverty and education interventions.
But school food environments are shaped by broader food policies. Front-of-Pack Warning Labels (FOPL) and a strengthened Health Promotion Levy (HPL) are critical tools to protect children from unhealthy food, reduce sugar consumption, and support better nutrition outcomes.
As civil society, we continue pushing the government to act.
Our children are our future — and stopping child malnutrition is both our right and our duty.
