N vs. NN hair color explained (neutral base colors + grey coverage)

*key points:
•N stands for neutral or natural (may also read /0 in some hair color lines)

•NN is double neutral or natural (double pigment- may read /00 in some hair color lines)

•the N & NN series do not have a dominant tone- unlike 6R (level 6 with a tone of red- red would be the dominant tone for that color)

• you can use any N or NN hair color by itself with developer; however, they are most often used as base colors, meaning you would add another color to it

•N & NN hair colors are not designed to neutralize unwanted tones

•N & NN work really well for covering grays- N is used for a mild amount of greys, NN is used for 100% grey or really resistant hair

•If you have 25% grey you will add 25% of the N or NN to your formula

•NN hair colors most of the time make the hair appear darker due to the double amount of pigment; you will select a shade up to avoid this & do a patch test (take a small amount of hair behind the hair and test the hair color before fully committing)
