• Level system= measurement of lightness or darkness of hair color

•Can be 1-10 or 1-12

•1= black, 10 or 12= palest yellow, brightest blonde

•Underlying pigment = natural warmth that shows up when you lighten hair

•Haircolor charts are also called shade charts or swatch charts

•When reading hair color, the first number= level, the first letter is the primary tone, and the second letter (or can be a number) is the secondary tone. Example: 5RV= level 5 haircolor with a dominant tone of Red and a secondary tone of Violet.

•Color Key:
(This is a basic guide; all hair color lines are different and use different letters to mean different colors/tones.)

A= Ash, B= Blue, G= Gold, N= Neutral, NA = Neutral-Ash, NB= Neutral-Brown, NN= Natural/Neutral, O= Orange, R= Red, RO= Red Orange, RR= Red Red, RV = Red Violet, V= Violet

•To determine existing hair color level: take a small section of hair at the crown and hold it up from the scalp to let light pass through. Match the hair using a level chart (1-10, 1-12 Natural Series)

•warm tones= reds, yellows, oranges (fire)

•cool tones= blues, greens, purples (mountain scape)

•gray hair shows up when hair is starting to lose its natural pigment
