NAC Attack, A Multicenter Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trial to Test Oral N-Acetylcysteine in Patients with RP
Peter Campochiaro, MD: Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) is a retinal degeneration caused by many different mutations that cause the death of rod photoreceptors but not cone photoreceptors. The presentation explains why the elimination of rod photoreceptors leads to the gradual death of cones from oxidative damage and why medications that reduce oxidative
damage may provide benefit in RP. The presentation also describes a clinical trial designed to test the effect of a medication that reduces oxidative damage in patients with RP. How this clinical trial could impact the lives of all patients with RP, including those with Usher syndrome, will be explained.
