Metal Decking For Concrete: Your Guide To Composite Metal Floor Decking

What’s Composite Floor Deck?
It's a corrugated metal deck that has embossments in the flutes of the steel decking. The metal deck will have a concrete slab and as the concrete cures it will bond with the steel decking. This creates a composite metal floor deck.

Composite metal floor decks will increase the strength of the floor without adding extra weight.

Composite Floor Decking Versus Steel Form Decking

Both types will support wet concrete, but steel form decking will not become bonded to the concrete. It’s only a stay in place form that will support the weight of the concrete slab. It will not increase the strength of the floor.

Composite floor decking has embossments in the ribs of the steel decking. The embossments bond with the concrete slab. Once the concrete is cured, the concrete and the metal decking become one item that’s bonded together. They become a composite metal floor deck. Composite metal floor deck systems increase the strength of the floor without adding extra weight.

The three main types of composite steel decking are 1.5”, 2”, and 3” in depth.
The depth of the metal floor deck and the gauge of the steel will determine the strength of the metal decking and the engineering values.

Metal Decking For Concrete Slabs
Metal decking concrete slabs will need to be a minimum of 2” greater than the depth of the panel. For example, 1.5” floor deck requires a 3.5” minimum slab thickness. Depending on the type of composite floor decking and the engineering requirements the concrete slab thickness will range from 3.5” to 7.5”

The majority of composite floor decks will use structural concrete. This type of concrete will add strength to the structure. It’s available as a normal weight concrete, 145-155 pounds per cubic foot, or lightweight concrete, 110 pounds per cubic foot. The engineer will determine which type will be used on your project.

Where Can I Buy Metal Decking For Concrete?
If you want to buy metal decking, you have two choices. Buy direct from the steel mill or use a metal decking distributor. Unless you already have a relationship with the steel mill, they will rarely allow you to purchase factory direct. Instead, they will refer you to a metal decking distributor.
