Funeral Mass for Thomas Ellis Laborio, Sr. on June 28, 2025
Thomas Ellis Laborio Sr. passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Sunday, June 22, 2025, in Lexington, Kentucky. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who cared deeply for and enjoyed his family.
Born to Manuel E. and Maria Defusco Laborio in Providence, Rhode Island, Thomas was a proud Navy veteran who served aboard the aircraft carriers USS Midway, and USS Bon Homme Richard during the Korean War. He had a long career with the Okonite Cable Company, at offices across the United States, retiring as one of their Plant Managers. Thomas was proud to have been the Plant Manager for the office that developed and built the electric cable that powers the Statue of Liberty.
Thomas was a multi sport athlete in high school, an avid lifetime golfer, and a dedicated member and volunteer for the Central Kentucky Senior Men’s Golf Association for many years. He also generously shared his knowledge as a volunteer educator, teaching seniors how to use computers.
Thomas is survived by his beloved wife of 73 years, Ruth Carpenter Laborio. He will be deeply missed by his children: Diane Marie Laborio of Wake Forest, North Carolina; Thomas Ellis Laborio Jr. (Anne) and Carol Ann Young (Rob) of Lexington, Kentucky; and Christine Laborio-Garner (Jack) of Indianapolis, Indiana. He also leaves behind his brother, Robert Laborio (Judy). He was preceded in death by his sister, Marie Laborio Emmett.
Thomas was a cherished grandfather to Ben Laborio (Kelsey) and Amanda Olmsted (Travis), both of Lexington, KY; Jaclyn Slomianyj (Owen) of Chapel Hill, NC; Josh Young (Hope) and Scott Young, both of Lexington, KY; and Jessica Adkins (Natalia) of Bristol, England and Nicole Adkins, of Indianapolis, IN.
His legacy continues through his great-grandchildren: Charlotte and Cooper Laborio, Harry Olmsted, Gideon Young, and Marisha Adkins-Mikucka.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 28, 2025 at Pax Christi Catholic Church. Visitation will be held from 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the church. A private burial will be in the Lexington Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Honor Flight Kentucky at https://www.honorflightky.org or mail to Honor Flight Kentucky, P.O. Box 25025, Lexington, Kentucky, 40524.
