Take A Minute …and transport yourself to another place. Ballywalter is a town on the east coast of the Ards Peninsula in County Down. There are two beaches; the smaller "Dully Beach" on the north shore of the harbour and this one, called "Long Sands", on the harbours south shore. A beautiful expanse of sandy beach, perfect for a long walk or a dip in the water.
As you glide across the beach from the air, look out for the restored Victorian Lime Kilns. In use at Ballywalter in the early 18th century they would have received lime on small sloops or boats, from Whitehead and Drogheda. When lit, the kilns burned for 24 to 36 hours. Stories are told about people from the village going to the kilns on winter nights to get warmed. When processed, the lime could be bought by the bucketful for people to whitewash their houses or by the barrel by farmers to spread on the land to improve soil. At the Lime Kilns, a raised area provides great views of the Irish Sea coastline.
