The Russian language was once the glue of an empire – the voice of Pushkin, the instrument of Soviet power, and the soft-power tool Moscow used across Central Asia, Eastern Europe, and the Global South. Today, that same language is in retreat. From Ukraine and the Caucasus to Poland, Kazakhstan, and beyond, Russian is losing ground as societies distance themselves from the cultural and political influence it once carried.
