What does it feel like to see your face used in a deepfake designed to discredit your reporting? How do you judge when online harassment might spill into physical danger? And how can journalists navigate nationalist or misogynistic mobs that weaponize online spaces to silence critical voices?
These are among the urgent questions to be explored at a panel discussion co-hosted by UNESCO and the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand (FCCT), which will examine how artificial intelligence and evolving online ecosystems are amplifying risks for journalists. Held under the theme of UNESCO’s 2025 International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists — “Chat GBV: Raising Awareness on AI-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence against Women Journalists” — the event will look at how digital technologies are fueling gendered disinformation and coordinated harassment, and how trauma-informed journalism and newsroom solidarity can help mitigate their impact.

Cait McMahon, founding director, Dart Centre Asia-Pacific, on building trauma-informed newsrooms and supporting colleagues targeted by online abuse.
Hathairat Phaholtap, Thai editor, The Isaan Record, on online harassment and associated reporting challenges.
Tin Zar Aung, journalism trainer and media consultant, founder of Myanmar Women in Media, on the experiences of women journalists navigating online threats in and around Myanmar.
Marking this global call to action, the Bangkok panel will provide a platform for journalists and mental-health experts to share first-hand experiences, explore how newsrooms can better support affected colleagues, and promote greater accountability for online and offline violence against journalists
