John Deere Z655 leaking oil and making a mess? Briggs & Stratton twin cylinder leaking completely walkthrough and repair

In this video I show how I diagnose and repair a serious oil leak on a Briggs and Stratton commercial V twin (27.0 HP cyclonic) engine model 440977-0110-G5

The leak looked like it could be head gaskets at first, so I walk through how to confirm engine health the right way

This one initially looks like it could be head gaskets, so I show how to confirm what is actually going on before you start replacing parts. You will see:

How to find top dead center (TDC) on the compression stroke on each cylinder

Why a leak down test tells you cylinder health and can help confirm a bad head gasket

How to identify an external head gasket leak by listening for a whooshing sound (with an example mower)

Next I use UV dye, a UV light, and UV glasses to make the leak obvious when you cannot tell otherwise

The dye test quickly shows the real leak sources on this mower:

Oil cooler and oil cooler lines
Drain hose fitting where it threads into the sump (crankcase cover)
Sump (crankcase cover) gasket leaking (visible with dye)

On this Z655 the oil was coming from the oil cooler and oil cooler lines, the drain hose fitting where it threads into the sump, and the crankcase cover gasket area

I also show all the common places to check on these Briggs V twins, including a loose oil filter, oil cooler base leaks, valve covers, dipstick tube issues and the end of the drain tube (even though ours was leaking at the threaded fitting, not the hose end)
