Porth-y-Waen is a small village close to Oswestry. Its railway station was open between 1904 and 1951 and was initially operated by the Tanat Valley Railway.
The Cambrian Railway had originally opened a short branch line to the village from the main Oswestry to Welshpool line in 1861 to serve local quarries. The Tanat Valley Railway then built a line from this one, which ran to the Welsh village of Llangynog.
The line only had a light usage and closed to passengers in 1951, although it remained open for another 20 years for freight. Today the platform remains, as does track, and various other relics. Close to the station are two level crossings, both still with the original signs up.
There are hopes that the Cambrian Heritage Railway may one day extend its route using this line through Porth-y-Waen station.
