Tactical Genetic Control Tools for Rats

Описание: Björn Oback (Bioeconomy Science Institute), Catherine Collins (University of Otago) and Ocean Mercier (Victoria University of Wellington) will summarise research on developing genetic technologies for mammalian pest control in New Zealand. This technology aims to introduce rats that only produce male offspring, thereby skewing sex ratios and suppressing small populations.

We cover three research aims around:
development of a transgenic Norway rat suppression system in containment,
examination of population genomic datasets and gene flow in wild rat populations in Aotearoa,
assessment of societal attitudes towards the single-sex offspring approach, with particular emphasis on tikanga, mātauranga Māori and kaitiaki perspectives.
