West Point Organist Craig Williams plays a short whimsical prelude by the celebrated New York City organist and composer, Calvin Hampton, based on the chorale "O Sacred Head, Now Wounded." As this hymn reflects on the Passion, the piece takes on a meditative tone, with uncertainty underscored by the ambiguous harmonies heard throughout. In his work, Hampton used many 20th century compositional techniques, and here he applies bitonality - where one line in the right hand suggests one key and the other line seems to be in a different key. The other manual part adapts the hymn melody, with some rhythmic freedom. The pedal is not used. With the spare resources of two manual registrations against each other with no pedal, the resulting effect is surprisingly symphonic in its effect.
