American composer and organist Calvin Hampton (1938–1984) was born in Kittaining, Pennsylvania and grew up in Ravenna, Ohio. He was educated at the Oberlin Conservatory and Syracuse University. Following his graduation from Syracuse in 1963, he was appointed organist and choirmaster at Calvary Episcopal Church in the Gramercy Park neighborhood of New York City. He served there for 20 years, resigning in June of 1983 to focus on composition. He died a little more than a year later in August 1984 from AIDS, though remained very productive in his final year until his last few weeks. Hampton composed an enormous amount of church music in every genre. His innovative congregational/liturgical, sacred choral, and organ works have entered the standard repertoire of American church musicians. Hampton also composed concert and theater music.
