Jessica writes:
In this song, we sing the traditional Rosh Hashanah greetings: “Shana tova! Shana metukah!” (A good year! A sweet year!) These greetings are often combined into one: “Shana tova u’metuka!” (A good and sweet year!) On Rosh Hashanah, many Jews follow the custom of eating sweet foods to usher in a sweet new year. Especially honey! Many Jewish people begin their holiday meals with apples dipped in honey, and eat honey cake for dessert.
Jessica Fechtor is a writer living in San Francisco. She is the author of the best-selling memoir Stir: My Broken Brain and the Meals that Brought Me Home (Penguin Random House) and the play Book of Hours, which was developed by the Ground Floor at Berkeley Rep and the Great Plains Theatre Commons.
But before all this writing business, Jess traveled the world as music director of Pizmon, Columbia University’s Jewish a cappella group, bringing Jewish music workshops to schools, synagogues, and community centers, and performing for audiences of all ages.
